Summary: | Box 7 Folder 19: "Folder 19 is a copy of the Birmingham Times (May 18-20, 1978) which features an article commending Jesse Champion receiving an Alabama Associated Press Broadcasters award. He had been a newsman with WERC at this point for 8 years. We’ve talked about Jesse’s jazz work in the 1950s and ‘60s. He had intervened in a racial incident in 1963. He was told to leave town in 1963 by Bull Connor, who had cost him his teaching job at Councill School. Jesse went to Flint, Michigan. He returned in 1970, There’s also a picture of John Streeter in this issue as he was an editorial writer for the Birmingham Times. Source uncertain." |
