| Summary: | After LeRoy Pope Walker became the first Secretary of War of the Confederacy, he immediately issued the order to confederate forces to attack Fort Sumter. As the war escalated enlistments grew. A growing number of men of the Tennessee Valley signed up to defend their homes.
The following is a letter for supplies and support issued to A. B. Moore from John Rather.
"Hon. A. B. Moore,
Dear Sir,
We had a meeting here today for the purpose of raising a volunteer company. We have 53 men, and Monday next, the 22nd inst., will complete the company at Somerville and immediately thereafter will organize by the election of officers. We lend our services to you and through you to the Confederate Government and desire to be received into immediate services in the Volunteer Corps.
Write full needs as to requirements about uniforms and whether we are expected to prepare our own tents or will the government furnish them, or rather can do it now.
Please respond promptly and oblige.
