Summary:In the first letter, Ogden, a merchant from Sulligent, Alabama, writes to State Council of Defense chairman Lloyd M. Hooper concerning the status of Army deserters. He proposes, "I have recently interviewed the parents of some boys who is thought to be deseters, and while I have obtained no direct imformation nor had any specific promise, but I believe that if we can get a promise or assurance from the War department that theese boys will be allowed to return and be accpted without punishment, they will voluntarily return and join the service." In the second letter, Hooper responds that the State Council of Defense cannot assure that deserters will not be punished on their return to camp.
