The handout includes information about crop rotation, growing seasons, and food preservation; the city plans "to install canning and preserving plants, therefore apprehension need not be felt about raising too great a quantity." The flier also announces that monetary prizes will be offered for the best gardens grown in different sections of the city. Separate prizes will be awarded to "colored people," and all amateur gardeners are eligible for the contest ("It is not limited to children"). Planting tables for various fruits and vegetables are given on the back. At the time the letter was written, Bankhead was representing Alabama in the United States Senate. |
