Summary:During the Civil War, Jones served in Company G of the 41st Alabama Infantry Regiment; he was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga on September 20, 1863. In the letter he explains that he became ill while traveling to Vicksburg and was taken to the hospital; he expects to join the other men soon but is not optimistic about the battle or its outcome: "i lisen every day to her of thim a being in a fight...i hope the fight will bee over before i get to thim for i nuver want to bee in ary nother fight as long as i live i think that our men will get whiped thar if tha fight." He mentions that the Union troops are "well fortifide" in Vicksburg, while the Confederate forces traveling there are already suffering: "tha was fore or five of the brigade dide the first day by over heat an hard marchen i fear that wee will hav an awful time her".
