In this letter to the editor of the Mobile Register, Langdon gives a long account of a dispute between himself and a Colonel Herndon over the Democratic nomination for governor, concluding thus: "It is exceedingly painful to me to feel constrained to make this publication. I regret it from personal, as well as political considerations. Personally, the relations between Col. Herndon and myself have been of the most friendly charact, and I deeply regret that anything should occur to interrupt them. Besides I have had enough turmoil and strife, and had hoped for peace and quiet during the few remaining days of my life. And it is utterly abhorrent to my feelings to be forced into even a seeming scramble for office. Politically I regret it, as calculated to create division and discord at a time when unity and harmony are essential to the success and our cause. But I feel that the responsibility is not with me." |
