Commissioned as a brigadier general in the Tennessee Provisional Army in May 1861, and later commissioned to the same rank in the Confederate Army in July 1861. Promoted to major general in March 1862. Major campaigns and battles include Belmont, Shiloh, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, the Atlanta campaign, Franklin, Nashville, and Bentonville. After the war, he returned to Tennessee, where he farmed and was later appointed as postmaster of Nashville. Cheatham died in September 1886 and is buried in Nashville. Sources: Boatner, Mark M.
