| Summary: | (No wartime uniformed photograph is known to exist. This photograph was probably taken at the time of Fort Sumter. - W. Davis.) Commissioned as a brigadier general in October 1861. Resigned his commission in February 1862 to take a seat in the Confederate Congress, but briefly served as General Longstreet's aide in the summer of 1862.
