After promoting through the grades, Holtzclaw was promoted to brigadier general in July 1864. Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh (wounded), Tullahoma campaign, Chickamauga (wounded), Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, the Atlanta campaign, Nashville, and the defense of Mobile.
