Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general.) Commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Montgomery True Blues and appointed a major in the 18th Alabama Infantry. After promoting through the grades, Holtzclaw was promoted to brigadier general in July 1864. Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh (wounded), Tullahoma campaign, Chickamauga (wounded), Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, the Atlanta campaign, Nashville, and the defense of Mobile.
