Summary:(Photograph taken in civilian clothes). Mexican War veteran. First commissioned as major general in the Provisional Army of Tennessee and then appointed as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army in July 1861. Major campaigns and battles include Belmont and Fort Donelson. Gained command at Fort Donelson when the senior officer fled to avoid capture. Pillow followed suit and relinquished his command to Brigadier General Simon Buckner. He was subsequently reprimanded for his actions and spent the remainder of the war in minor posts. After the war, Pillow resumed his law career. He died in Helena, Arkansas, in October 1878 and is buried in Memphis, Tennessee. Sources: Boatner, Mark M. The Civil War Dictionary.
