After promoting through the grades, Gibson was promoted to brigadier general in January 1864. Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Jackson, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, the Atlanta campaign, the Tennessee campaigns, and Mobile. Following the war, Gibson practiced law in New Orleans and later served as a congressman and U.S. senator. He died in Hot Springs, Arkansas, in December 1892, and is buried in Lexington, Kentucky.
