Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general.) Commissioned as a captain in the 1st Louisiana Heavy Artillery in May 1861; resigned this post in September 1861 for a commission in the 13th Louisiana Infantry. After promoting through the grades, Gibson was promoted to brigadier general in January 1864. Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Jackson, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, the Atlanta campaign, the Tennessee campaigns, and Mobile. Following the war, Gibson practiced law in New Orleans and later served as a congressman and U.S. senator. He died in Hot Springs, Arkansas, in December 1892, and is buried in Lexington, Kentucky.
