Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of brigadier general, though photograph may have been retouched to show a general's collar insignia.) Graduated form West Point, 1854. Resigned his commission in the U.S. Army in May 1861 and was commissioned as a lieutenant colonel of the 10th Virginia Infantry. After promoting through the grades, Pegram was promoted to brigadier general in November 1862. Major campaigns and battles include Rich Mountain (captured), the Kentucky campaign, Stones River, Chickamauga, the Wilderness (wounded), 1864 Shenandoah campaign, and Petersburg.
