Following his capture at Fort Donaldson, Brown was exchanged in August 1862 and promoted to brigadier general in September 1862. Promoted to major general in August 1864. Major campaigns and battles include Fort Donaldson (captured), Perryville (wounded), Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and Franklin (wounded).
