Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of major general.) Enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army and was commissioned as a colonel in the 3rd Tennessee Infantry in May 1861. Following his capture at Fort Donaldson, Brown was exchanged in August 1862 and promoted to brigadier general in September 1862. Promoted to major general in August 1864. Major campaigns and battles include Fort Donaldson (captured), Perryville (wounded), Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and Franklin (wounded). After the war, Brown returned to Tennessee and was later elected as governor. Brown died in August 1889 and is buried in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee. Sources: Boatner, Mark M.
