Summary:(Collar indicates rank of colonel, but the button arrangement is that of a brigadier general.) Commissioned into the U.S. Army in 1857; resigned his commission in 1859. Commissioned as a captain in the Confederate Cavalry at the outbreak of war. After promoting through the grades, Lee was promoted to brigadier general in November 1862 and major general in April 1864. Major campaigns and battles include the West Virginia campaign, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station (wounded), and Petersburg. Captured during convalescent leave in 1863 and exchanged in March 1864. After the war, he returned to farming and politics, serving as a U.S. representative.
