A North Carolina businessman before the war, Robert Hoke (1837-1912) entered Confederate service as a second lieutenant in the 1st North Carolina Infantry in the spring of 1861. After promoting through the grades, Hoke was promoted to brigadier general in January 1863 and major general in April 1864. Major campaigns and battles include New Berne, Seven Days', Cedar Mountain, Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville (wounded), North Carolina, Petersburg, Fort Fisher, and Bentonville.
