Summary:(Uniform indicates rank of colonel.) A North Carolina businessman before the war, Robert Hoke (1837-1912) entered Confederate service as a second lieutenant in the 1st North Carolina Infantry in the spring of 1861. After promoting through the grades, Hoke was promoted to brigadier general in January 1863 and major general in April 1864. Major campaigns and battles include New Berne, Seven Days', Cedar Mountain, Second Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville (wounded), North Carolina, Petersburg, Fort Fisher, and Bentonville. Following the war, Hoke resumed his business in North Carolina. He died in Raleigh, North Carolina, in July 1912 and is buried there. Sources: Boatner, Mark M. The Civil War Dictionary.
