Summary: | When the Confederate Government evacuated Richmond, Virginia, on April 2, 1865, the Confederate Treasury was also removed. Eventually, the gold and silver were transferred to wagons which remained with President Jefferson Davis. Prior to his capture, Davis paid the members of his escort from the Treasury. Captain George Rives, Company A, 56th Alabama Infantry (mounted) received $25.00 in gold and silver. Eleven Mexican silver dollars were saved by Rives as souvenirs. |
