description Caption on front: Jefferson Davis; Jefferson Davis, First President of the Southern Confederacy. It has been justly remarked, that President Davis, the warrior statesman, the dauntless hero, the ripe scholar, the brave soldier, the accomplished gentleman, the enlightened ruler, and unblemished patriot, already holds the first place in the affections of the South. A grateful and appreciative people accord to himthe revered title savior and father of this country-the second- Washington!-And the sublime eulogium which was according to Virginias immortal son, will be pronounced over the chivalrous and high-souled Davis, when the nation which he redeemed shall mourn his death, and celebrate his obsequies with the same pomp of national sorrow, that he was first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen. The digitization of this collection was funded by a gift from EBSCO Industries.
