description In his speech, Nevin talks about the imbalances he sees in society, especially how they result in poverty and the formation of slums in large cities. He claims that while we've grown and accelerated in many ways as a country, we haven't developed a moral and ethical framework with which to deal with this growth. He believes that the younger generation will be the one to work out this new way of thinking. He explains that currently, there is a gap between what we are (a capitalist society where the individual is subordinate to the corporation) and what we think we are (a society full of individuals still pursing the American dream of expansion and self-reliance). Our new moral system will have to hold both of these competing views in balance, whereas now they are simply held in tandem, alternated as the situation seems to warrant.
