Description
Summary:[Note: summary includes only the portion of the speech for which we have audio.] In his speech, Reston discusses America as the leader of the world revolution, starting the impulse back in 1776, and how it has lost track of that impulse. He says it has been especially distracted by Vietnam, and he spends a great deal of time talking about the consequences of assumption that we had to resort to using military power to solve the conflict. He says we didn't recognize that China and the Soviet Union are not as determined as they once were to take over the world, and we might still not realize this after we win get out of Vietnam. He calls on America to return to its own sense of revolution: eradicating the causes of war, such as “hunger, ignorance, and nationalistic selfishness.â€
