Summary: | In his speech, Rusk begins by discussing the changes that have come to the world in the past twenty years on the international political front. He says the U.S. is a world power and must help prevent the world from slipping into chaos. He calls for cooperation between his generation and the younger one - both generations need help - because the younger is perhaps unaware of the lessons of WWII while the older needs to learn to move past some of its suspicions. Above all, the lesson he thinks everyone should learn is the need for peace to preserve the world. He says the U.S. is prepared to negotiate with North Vietnam but can't do anything if they won't engage with them on those terms of seeking peace. He ends by discussing the tasks of future generations, including nuclear disarmament and working to stay uncorrupted as the leader of the nations of the world. |
