Augusta Evans, an Alabama novelist, writes her friend, Rachel. The possibility of an attack on Mobile has vanished. An English steamer came into harbor from Havana. A package for her containing stocking, handkerchiefs, and a small box of champagne had been shipped via the steamer. Healy, the Louisiana artist, has painted a portrait of Captain Cox and will paint General Quarles next week. General Quarles is now in command of the post. She reported working in her flower beds and the help that she received. She remarked on correspondence that she had received. Augusta makes reference to a duel involving Dr. Heustis that ended without bloodshed.The digitization of this collection was funded by a gift from EBSCO Industries. |
