Alabama native and African American educator, Allen Shepherd Plump, Jr., in his introduction said he would tell his story in a simple and concise way. He went on to list the chapters of this small volume, which began with a brief history of his parents, freed slaves in Green[e] County, Alabama. Plump was born in 1868 and was educated at the Tuskegee Institute. He served as a teacher and principal in various Green[e] and Sumter county schools and his book focused on his life in these roles, as well as being a church leader. The pamphlet is illustrated with black and white photographs showing his portrait and also members of his family, photographs of his houses, three photographs of the Sumter County Training School, and one photograph of the First Baptist Church in Livingston, Alabama. Our copy is inscribed by the author. Running title: Brief life story of Allen Shepherd Plump, Jr. |
