McLendon, a graduate of Howard College, was an ordained Baptist minister who at the age of 29 left the ministry and moved to Luverne, AL. where he established a weekly newspaper known as The Luverne Journal and made a name for himself with his editorials. After over 40 years of owning and operating the paper, he turned the paper over to his son James Merritt McLendon in 1933. McLendon also served two terms as president of the Alabama Press Association.
