Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Wilson's family moved to Alabama when she was young. Wilson attended Alabama Normal College (now the University of West Alabama), and became a school teacher for young children. In 1915, Wilson moved to California after winning a beauty contest that was held by Universal Studios and the Birmingham News. This contest was the predecessor to the Miss Alabama and Miss America beauty pageants. Wilson is considered to have been the first Miss Alabama. Upon arriving in Hollywood, Wilson was hired by the Victor Film Company. Wilson soon met female directing pioneer Lois Weber. Weber took Wilson under her wing and groomed her for stardom.
