Summary: | The Bankhead Tunnel was a Works Progress Administration project. It was built by the Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company between 1938 and 1942, and named for John Hollis Bankhead, a U.S. Senator from Alabama and grandfather of Tallulah Bankhead. These men are working on a section of the tunnel, ca. 1940, prior to its being submerged beneath the Mobile River. The completed tunnel is still heavily used. |
