Summary: | In 1859 Timothy Meaher and Captain William Foster conspired to illegally import a cargo of Africans. They were smuggled into the United States, landing in the Plateau/Magazine Point district north of Mobile. After the Civil War many of the Africans returned to that area and established a settlement they called "Africatown." Cudjo Lewis became their spokesman. He lived well into his nineties. This photo of Lewis in his home in the 1930s is a labyrinth of visual information and interest. |
