Summary: | Located on Government Street, Barton Academy was the first public school in the state of Alabama. It was the brainchild of community leaders such as Henry Hitchcock and Willoughby Barton, who believed Mobile was the most important city in the state. Constructed in 1835, the building was designed by two noted New York architects, James Gallier and Charles Dakin. It remained in use as a public school into the 1960s, then became the administrative offices for the school system. This photo was taken ca. 1920. |
