Description
Summary:"Up the Pace, Save for Peace" was the slogan written on this hangar during World War II at Brookley Field. Through the efforts of local U.S. congressman Frank Boykin, the federal government announced plans on July 13, 1939, to put a new air supply depot at Brookley Field. Chosen for its deep water and rail access, construction of the field, located on the site of the old Bates Field, began on June 20, 1940. The first enlisted man arrived August 10, 1940, and the first plane landed on March 5, 1941. With a payroll of $93,000,000.00 in 1960, the air base was a huge economic boon for the city. Plans for its closing were announced on November 20, 1964. It shut its doors on June 30, 1969.
