Bankhead Tunnel

A cave-in during construction of the Bankhead Tunnel in Mobile, Alabama. The tunnel was named for John Hollis Bankhead, a U.S. Senator and grandfather of the actress Tallulah Bankhead. The tunnel was a New Deal project that poured vital monies into Mobile during the Great Depression.
