Dauphin Island, Alabama

Although hard to see in this image, Dauphin Island is home to Mississippian-era (1100-1550 A.D.) Indian mounds of discarded oyster shells (otherwise known as middens). They can be faintly seen in this ca. 1900 photograph of the north shore of the eastern portion of the island.
