Summary:Designed by Claude Beroujon, construction on the Cathedral ofthe Immaculate Conception began in 1834 under the direction of Mobile's first Catholic bishop, Michael Portier (1825-1859). The first stage of its construction was completed by 1854. Additions to the outside of the building were on-going, including a complete restoration initiated by the diocese's eighth bishop, Oscar Lipscomb. Pope John XXIII designated the Cathedral as a Minor Basilica in 1962.This image shows the interior of the Cathedral about 1900.
