Summary: | Walter Bellingrath (1869-1955) was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He moved to Mobile in 1903 and owned the local Coca-Cola bottling franchise, which netted him a fortune. As a way to relax, in 1917 he bought a fishing lodge on Fowl River that he called Bellcamp. From 1917 to 1932, Bellingrath and his wife, Bessie Morse Bellingrath, turned their lodge from the humble place it began into a world-class garden, which they opened to the public in 1932.
