Summary: | The old St. Mary's Church and rectory. Established by Bishop John Quinlan, Mobile's second bishop, in 1867, the church was located at the southwest corner of Lafayette Street and the old Shell road (Old Shell Road). Father Abram Joseph Ryan (ca. 1838-1886), the man shown in the inset, became pastor of the church in 1877 and served until 1881. Ryan was one of the South's most beloved people. He joined the Confederate army on September 1, 1862 and served as a chaplain throughout the Civil War. For his later compositions related to the Confederacy and the Lost Cause, Ryan was affectionately known as the "poet-priest of the Confederacy." |
