Summary: | On September 22, 1993, the worst train wreck in American history occurred near Mobile, Alabama, to Amtrak's train the Sunset Limited. The accident occurred in heavy fog when a tow boat pushing a barge struck the swing bridge over the Bayou Canot, knocking it some three feet off kilter. Crossing the bridge a few minutes later, the train derailed, killing 42 of the 220 passengers and crew aboard. |
