The oaks of Bienville Square were still recovering from the hurricane of 1926 when this photo was taken. Towering to the west is the Cawthon Hotel, constructed in 1906 using a steel frame and reinforced concrete. Atop the hotel was a glass enclosed roof garden, added after 1906, where people held dances and banquets. To the left, beneath a tiled roof, were a series of retail shops housing Mobile Optical, Staubs Gift Shop, and Gus Mayer and Company. The hotel fell victim to the fashionable 1960s motor motels. |
