description Color print view of the Alabama State Bird - Yellowhammer. Colorful bird with shades of brown, black, white. Resting on a post. Divided back postcard.Printed on front: 'Yellowhammer-The cheerful yellowhammer is found throughout Alabama, and in 1927 the Legislature made it the Official State Bird. Here, the yellowhammer is shown with State Tree, the pine in the background. Twelve species of the pine are found in Alabama, but the author of the 1949 Act making it the State Tree said he had the long leaf pine in mind when he wrote the bill. The pine, incidentally, grows very much faster in Alabama than it does in northern states - a fact which is attracting more and more paper manufacturers, and other timber users, to Alabama. Printed on back: 'Official State Bird of Alabama The Yellowhammer or Flicker. The Yellowhammer or Flicker, is Alabama's State Bird, although it was not officially chosen until 1927. It had generally been known as Alabama's State Bird since the War Between the States. During the last years of this War for Southern Independence, Alabama's Soldiers were called "Yellowhammer" because of the color of their homespun uniforms which in the absence of commercial dyes were colored with the jucie of the hickory bark.
