Mrs. Netta Tutwiler McCorvey, the wife of a history professor, was concerned about the lack of landscaping on the campus in 1910, so she planted magnolia seedlings near some of the buildings. The parent tree was a large magnolia tree located between the McCorvey's residence and the president's mansion. Postmarked May 12, 1927.
