Printed view of Facts about Dothan, AL. A card printed on face side with complete facts about the city of Dothan, Alabama. Divided back postcard.'Printed on front: "For I heard them say, 'Let us go to Dothan' ", Genesis 37:17. 'Facts about Dothan, Alabama -Originally this fair city was known as Poplar Head. After a few years the name was changed to Dothan. Presumably this name was suggested by the place in the Bible called Dothan. It is situated in the southeast corner of the state in what is sometimes called the Wiregrass, in one of the best farming sections of the state. Now, the population is approaching 20,000 and has doubled in the last 20 years. It is in the center of a trade area reaching out 75 miles or more in every direction. We extend to you a cordial welcome and invite you to visit and clearly observe us and our environments. We are not much given to "blowing our own horn" -we know others will do that for us. First chance you have take a stroll through the business section and note the marks of progress made since it was a mere cross roads village, Since Dothan gets its name from the Bible it is a city noted for its modern church plants and fine congregations. Within the city limits there are 14 church buildings for white congregations and five for the colored people, representing the leading denominations. The educational system for the training of the youth is not surpassed. There are seven school buildings for the whites and three for the colored. There are two business colleges to train young men and women for business careers. One imposing Masonic Temple houses the various Masonic bodies. Tow strong banks serve the financial interests of the city and vicinity. One government building houses the Post Office, the U. S. Court and various offices. Three modern hotels accomodate the traveling public. Four theatres furnish amusement and instruction to those minded to attend. One hosiery mill furnishes employment to 212 girls, women and men. Three Truckline railroads serve to transport merchandise in from factories and out to the buying public. Eight paved highways enter this city and connect it with the outside world. It has one radio broadcasting station with a wave length reaching out 75 to 100 miles. One daily and two weekly newspaper gather news from the four corners of the earth for the reading public. It has fine hospitals and a $50,000 stadium. It is only 15 minutes drive to Sealy's Hot Mineral Well, a famous health resort. Just 32 miles south of Dothan are the Florida State Caverns, the rival of Mammoth Cave. Also, it is a 30 minutes frive to Lake Tholocco covering two square miles, famous for fine fishing and a summer resort. 1000 lakes for fishing are within an hour and a half drive. It is only two hours drive to the Gulf of Mexico with its hundreds of beautiful snow-white beaches. Near Dothan is a three million dollar Government Air Base for the training of airplane pilots. An automobile ride over the beautiful shaded streets will give you an idea of this fast-growing city. We hope your visit to us will be mutually profitable in every way. For further information write Chamber of Commerce. "For I heard them say, 'Let us go to Dothan' ", Genesis 37:17. |
