The cafe began as a hot dog stand in the late 1920's. In 1932 it was purchased by Bess Fortenberry who was the great aunt of Fannie Flagg, the inspiration for Miss Flagg's novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. "Miss Bess" started serving plate lunches, barbecue and other sandwiches and beer. The seating capacity was 31. In December of 1972 Miss Fortenberry sold the cafe to Billy and Mary Jo McMichael. A new building was erected in 1980 and the building next door was added in December 1990. At the present time, seating capacity is 275 plus.
