| Summary: | Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands reviewed labor contract between landowners and Montgomery County, Alabama freedmen. The record has been transcribed as follows:A contract with Freedmen for labor for the year 1868[.] I [,] F.M. Tankersley agree to furnish land [,] mules [,] and tools and pay the blacksmith bill for keeping the plows in repair during the year and we the undersigned laborers are to furnish all the feed for ourselves and the mules and return the mules & tools at the end of the year in good order[.] We further agree to furnish our clothes & pay our own doctors bills and we (the laborers) are to plant a crop of corne[sic] & cotton and cultivate the same[.] Also to gather [,] house [,] and prepare it for market the [is] crop to be well cultivated under the controle [sic] of said F.M.J. Tankersley or his agent [.] if a hand fails to labor from idleness or disorder it subjects him or her to be discharged and their part of the crop forfeited the crop when gathered is to be equally deordered[?] between said Tankersley and the undersigned laborers that is that said tankersley is to have one half of the entire crop and the undersigned freedmen the other half formily[?] according[?] them according to squad[?] land grade of hand[?] The crop to be controlled by said Tankersley and good condiest[?] is is[sic] to be observed on the part of the laborer & the rules of the plantation regulating labors strictly observed and the fencing to be kept in repair & the clothes kept clean & etc Said[?] Tankersley is to advance Leioh[?] an amount of corn to feed the mules and laborers as they may need & we the laborers are to replace the same amount of corn of our own exposed[?] at the end of the year [.] We further obligate and bind ourselves by Squads formity[?] to pay said Tankersley for any and all advances he may make for us for corn meat medicine & louh[?] clothing as we are compeled[sic] to have[.] We further agree that said Tankersley may take his pay out of our share of the crop every member of a squad being security[?] for what what[?] particular squad its from *said Tankersley furnished 1/4 of my mule feed in* **in his exphir[?]** no riotous or disorderly conduct will be allow[ed] under any circumstances this January 9, 1868
