Summary:Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands reviewed labor contract between landowners and Montgomery County, Alabama freedmen. This record has been transcribed as follows: This Contract made and entered into between James Mason hasty of the first part and The Freedmen whose names are here unto signed. Those having wives whose names are inserted in the schedule binding there lierely foreseeing parties of the secured part whose names are inserted in the schedule from the date of this agreement untill[sic] the crop is all gathered. The party of the first part is to furnish land, mules, tools and agrees to give the party of the second part one third of the corn, cotton, and fodder and instead of one acre of ground the party of the second part is to have a garden and potatoe[sic] patch and cross corn[?]The party of the second part for and in consideration of the above promises and undertaking by the party of the first part agree and bind ourselves to cultivate the amount of land agreed upon by the parties. It is to be well worked anyone who idles away his time the party of the first part has the right to hire a hand in his place and him (the idler) be charged with the expenses the party of the second part agrees to bind themselves to take good care of the stock Return all tools they have charge of to the party of the first part to keep good order to assist in forceing[sic] any Onalicious[?] person from the place The part of all the crop cultivated raised and gatherered by the laborers on the said premises during the year as afore said wherever the same shall be gathered and saved by them shall be delivered to them their part. Any indebtedness of the second party shall be paid to the party of the first part on the delivery of their part the party of the second part agree to furnish their own rations.
