description Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands reviewed labor contract between landowners and Montgomery County, Alabama freedmen. This record has been transcribed as follows: Squad No. 2 Lownds[sic] Co Ala December 28 1868 Know[?] all men by these[?] present that I A J Goldsmith of the above said state & county have contracted with the freedmen whose naimes are hearafter assigned to leighbor on my farm in above said state & county during the year of 1867[?]. First the above said leighborers perform frankly[?] & faithfully all the leighbors usually performed by such leighborers on plantations in said county. 2 They further agree to be polite & cirteous too myself & family & in my absence from any cause they agree too regard my agent or successor[?] with the saim respect 3 The said Goldsmith or his successor[?] agree to give said leighborers as compensation for their leighbors one half of all the corn fodder peas potatoes & cotton that said leighbours may [???] on said Goldsmith�s plantation. After deducting their from[?] ha the expenses[?] that may occur in raising gathering & putting[?] in market[?] said crops. 4 The above said leighborers paying[?] for half the tiames[?] took to[?] stock[?] that may[?] did[?] be[?] misplaced or otherwise damaged while in their semis[?] or care[?] 5 The above said leighborers further agree to pay for all lost time at the rate fifty 50 per day which sums[?] shall be equally divided between the said Goldsmith & the squad that they may leighbor with 6 The above said leighborers agree to take raise & fatten [document damaged] hogs as the said Goldsmith may turn over too [damaged] of which they ar to return too the said Goldsmith or his [damaged] the close of the year 7 The above said Goldsmith or his [damaged] the wright to discharge from leighbour any of [damaged] leighborers who may violate this contract & the honer[?] so discharged forfeits all wright to to pay for any leighbor he or other may have performed 8 the said Goldsmith or his successor agree to furnish sufficient teams[?] to cultivate the above said farm 9 He further agrees to see that the above said leighborers have Church & school privileges on said farm if desired by them That no person disturb them while on my primises 10 said Goldsmith or his successor agree to divide said leighborers half of said crop according to their several . In the event that any of aforesaid leighborers die during the year said Goldsmith or his successor agree to dispose [?] of his or her affects as may be directed by the persons 12 the said Goldsmith or his successor have the power to adjust difficulties [?] that may arise between the laborers.
