This record has been transcribed as follows:Montgomery Co. Ala Jan 11th 1868 To All whom it may Concern Be it known that we the undersigned have made the following contract & agreement for labor for the year 1868 and we do furthermore find ourselves to be governed by the following rules and regulations. M. J. (and this only when the said hand is working) this amount so furnished by me must be deducted from the wages on hand of the crop which may be due to the laborer at the end of the year. The retail market price of Montgomery of such articles as may be furnished being the guide to settle by. And I also agree that I will not charge them for such medical attention as I may give them. Only for the medicines which may be used by them. The corn & other crops must be housed at the place designated by me and the cotton picked gined [sic] packed and delivered at a ware house in Montgomery. And I the said G. C. Nicholson having full possession and control of the cotton and all other crops which may be due to the laborers until all advances, charges, and cost from whatever cause may be settled by said freedmen. 2nd we the laborers whose names are signed to this contract and find ourselves to be governed by *it* and to faithfully execute the following rules and regulations 3rd to rise at day break, to feed & rear[?] stock & to repair immediately to work and to render good and faithful services until 12 oclock, when one hour will be allowed for dinner during the winter and spring months and fall months and one hour and half during the summer months and then return to labor and to work faithfully until dusk. 4th All lost time (will be kept by the employer) from any cause whatever either in days or parts of days.
