In nearby Boaz, Anna D. Elder founded a seminary in 1898 which was soon transferred to the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In response to the school’s needs for expansion, local businessman John H. Snead donated land and money to the seminary. The school was renamed John H. Snead Seminary in his honor.
In 1963 the State of Alabama created the Community College System. In 1967 the state acquired the Snead Seminary creating what is now called Snead State Community College.
