Col. Robert Benjamin (R. B.) Kyle was born May 24, 1826 at Leaksville, North Carolina. In 1853 he moved to Cherokee County, Ala. and four years later moved to Gadsden, Ala. He was a merchant and a banker. He organized a company of volunteer infantry (which later became Company A, 31st Alabama Infantry). At the end of the war, he returned to Gadsden and helped build a railroad, started a sawmill and also the Elliott Car Company. He was president of the Gadsden Land and Improvement Company and was the first Mayor Gadsden He died in Gadsden on January 7, 1922. |
