Summary:Etowah County Tuberculosis Sanitarium was located at 3000 Scenic Highway in Gadsden, Ala. In 1918 it was established as a “fresh air camp” with six canvas and lumber tent structures. In 1926, the camp was destroyed by fire and construction began on a permanent building. Officially named the “Madru Inzer Memorial Hospital,” it became known as the Etowah County Tuberculosis Sanitarium. This structure would remain in use until 1956 when a larger facility was constructed that could care for up to 145 patients and featured up-to-date equipment and facilities.
